“Lazy” by Thomas Weary, 2018

I am ten years old and the California heat is beating down straight through the brim of my hat. I can see my father in his old tattered jeans, dusty and torn. He’s staggering and he has my sister in his arms. I can tell my sister has been asleep under the blanket. Oddly, she hasn’t made a sound. No movement but the heat is so great I only lift my head a few times to look up at them.
